Malik is an experienced computer programmer and freelance technical writer. He was born and raised in Nigeria, Africa. Being a freelance writer was his plan to escape poverty, but due to his geographic region, he could not get value for his skills.

After Malik graduated from the university, he couldn't get a job due to the high unemployment rate in Nigeria. The only way he could start earning was to sell his skills on an online marketplace. But the high inflation rate in Nigeria is nothing to write home about, and it kept sucking out the purchasing power of Malik's earnings.

I got paid in Bitcoin as a freelance technical writer

A software company based in the United States of America reached out to me through LinkedIn. They had seen my previous jobs and wanted me to write an article on their latest product. Excited about the opportunity before me, I diligently worked on the article. I delivered the job, and it was time to get paid.

The transaction would take five working days to receive USD in Nigeria, and a 10% transaction fee (at the time) would be charged. Using that route was not a good idea; that transaction fee would solve one or two of my problems then.

Then, I decided to use Bitcoin. I asked to be paid in Bitcoin, and they agreed. I sent my wallet address and got my payment instantly.

I now accept Bitcoin only as payment

To me, Bitcoin is a tool other than digital money. As a Nigerian freelancer, I believe that Bitcoin serves as a bridge to access and participate in the economy outside Africa. I also use Bitcoin as my edge against inflation in Nigeria.
